Audi RS6 And Mercedes-AMG E63 S Brawl For Family Car Supremacy

The Audi RS6 Avant and Mercedes-AMG E63 S are two of the fastest family cars on the market.

Both are powered by 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8s. In the RS6 Avant this engine is paired to a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, for a total output of 591 hp and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque. This power is sent through all four wheels courtesy of an eight-speed automatic transmission from ZF. By comparison, the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 of the E63 S is slightly more powerful with 603 hp and 626 lb-ft (850 Nm). It too is all wheel drive.

Admittedly, this isn’t a perfect apples-to-apples comparison as the E63 S tested was a sedan, which weighs roughly 240 lbs (110 kg) less than the Estate variant. Still, both cars are incredibly quick and to see just which of the two has the advantage, Car Buyers Guide in South Africa lined them up for a drag race.

Off the line, the duo both launch with exceptional poise but it is the Audi that carves out a slight lead as the Mercedes struggles to put all of its power to the ground. It initially seems as though the RS6 will walk away victorious but as the speeds start to build, the extra horsepower and torque of the E63 S allows it to claw its way back and ultimately claim the victory.

Nissan GT-R Finds Out Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid And Audi RS6 Are No Easy Rivals

<!––>

<!––>

In times gone by, the R35 Nissan GT-R was pretty much the quickest-accelerating production car on earth. However, considerably quicker supercars have come along in recent years, leaving the GT-R for dead. But, surely, with all of its power and traction, the GT-R will have no issues out-performing a couple of fast family cars, right?

Eager to answer that very question, CarWow lined up a Nissan GT-R Nismo against a Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid and an Audi RS6. The races from a standing start and a rolling race are very telling.

In the one and only race from a standing start, all three cars sprint off the line at impressive speeds and for the first few feet, are well matched. However, as the speeds start to increase, the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid and Nissan GT-R begin to eke out a lead. Eventually, it is the Porsche that stays ahead of the GT-R as the duo cross the finish line in a perfect demonstration of just how potent the Panamera is.

As for the rolling race, it was just as intriguing. With all three cars in their standard driving modes and with their transmissions in automatic modes, the RS6 gets off the line best but once again, the Porsche and Nissan soon leave it for dead. The main difference with this race is the fact that the Nissan started to pull away from the Porsche as the speeds increased.

Wise Guys Trying To Skip Traffic Jam Using The Emergency Lane Meet Officer Karma

<!––>

<!––>

A handful of motorists in King City, California thought they were outsmarting other drivers during a recent traffic jam but local police had actually outsmarted them.

This video was recently posted to YouTube by ViralHog and shows the cammer sitting in a traffic jam when all of a sudden, a white GMC pickup skips the line of traffic by driving down the emergency lane. Closely following it down the emergency lane are a number of other vehicles, including another pickup truck, a Tesla Model X, a Honda Accord, a Chevrolet Camaro, and a Dodge Durango.

As traffic begins to slowly move forward, the cars that skipped traffic come into view and can be seen parked on the grass shoulder of the road. As it turns out, police officers were waiting at the end of the emergency lane and promptly pulled over all of the offending motorists. One of them can be seen speaking with a couple of drivers as the cammer drives past.

A number of other vehicles also sped down the emergency lane to avoid traffic, including two white Audi Q7s and a BMW 5-Series. However, these drivers managed to merge back into traffic before they too were stopped by the authorities.

It is unclear if the offending drivers were slapped with fines or simply given warnings but whatever happened, we hope this will serve as a wakeup call and discourage them from using the emergency lane again.

Scooter Rider Leads Police Chase Down Wrong Way Of Interstate Highway

A police chase ended miraculously well after a scooter rider behaving erratically led police on a multi-city chase starting in Danvers, Massachusetts, and ending in Medford just north of Boston.

CBS News followed the chase from its helicopter as the scooter was ridden down Insterstate 93 going the wrong way and weaving through oncoming traffic.

What started the chase is unclear, but the police say they chose to follow the scooter rider from afar in an attempt not to escalate the situation with the rider, who they believed to be suicidal.

Police apprehended the rider on Mystic Avenue in Medford and CBS reports that EMS was there to attend to him shortly after the chase ended.

Of course, not only is the rider lucky to be alive, but everyone driving down the highway this morning was lucky, too as the rider’s erratic driving could easily have triggered an accident that could have been very dangerous for other motorists.

The chase ended at 11:00 am local time and the suspect is now in police custody.

Can This FWD Acura Integra With 1,100 HP That Revs Up To 11,000 RPM Beat A 635 WHP ‘Cuda?

If you want a car that will get down the quarter-mile quickly, you’ll want it to be either rear- or all-wheel drive. Clearly, this didn’t stop the owner of an Acura Integra from creating one of the most remarkable front-wheel drive drag racers you will ever come across.

This Integra started out as a run-of-the-mill GS-R and remarkably, still rocks a small four-cylinder. However, in the pursuit of horsepower, the owner has fitted a massive Precision Gen2 7285 turbocharger that allows the engine to pump out a remarkable 1,100 hp. Just as remarkable, perhaps, is the fact that this engine revs to 11,000 rpm!

Obviously, simply strapping on a massive turbocharger and calling it a day wouldn’t have been enough to transform this fun-to-drive front-wheel drive sports car into a vehicle that can also power down the quarter-mile. As such, the owner went to the trouble of extending its wheelbase and has also fitted a set of massive 26-inch Mickey Thompson tires to help put the power to the pavement.

Keen to see how the car performs, the guys over at Hoonigan lined it up against a modified Plymouth Barracuda which sports a 7.2-liter Hemi 440 V8 that produced 390 hp back in the day but has since been upgraded to 635 hp at the wheels. So, does the massive power advantage of the Integra help it win this duel or can the ‘Cuda’s grip, thanks to it being rear-wheel drive, even the playing field?

Some See Art, Others See Crime In This 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera Art Car

All Porsche 911s are special but the exterior paint finish of this particular 1989 Carrera makes it even more so.

This 911 art car was created as part of the Art Cars Project run by the Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec in Canada and is being offered from a dealership in California with an accident-free Carfax report and an Arizona title. Responsible for the unique paint scheme were artist Dominic Besner and collaborator Yves Thibeault.

The front of the 911 depicts a bull with a nose ring with its horns extending over the front fenders and onto the doors. The rest of the paintwork combines elements of orange, red, yellow, brown, blue, white, black, and turquoise. Completing the striking exterior look are black 16-inch Fuchs-style wheels with custom-painted center caps complete with Porsche crests shod in 205/50 front and 225/50 rear Pirelli Cinturato tires.

Found in the interior are seats clad in tan-colored upholstery complete with matching floor mats and carpets. Key features include air conditioning and a Kenwood CD player.

Powering this 911 Carrera is a 3.2-liter naturally aspirated flat-six pumping out 217 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque, and the Bring A Trailer listing adds that the oil and battery was replaced in May 2020.

Rare Brand New McLaren 765LT Burned To The Ground Just After Owner Bought It

A rare McLaren 765LT has been destroyed by fire at a gas station in Pennsylvania.

The incident happened at the 500 block of Dekalb Pike in Upper Gwynedd Township earlier in the week at a Wawa gas station. According to North Penn Now, members of the Upper Gwynedd Fire Department arrived on the scene and found the vehicle on fire while it was parked near a fuel pump.

While authorities were able to quickly extinguish the blaze, they were not able to save the British supercar. As photos show, it was completely destroyed by the blaze and left a molten mess of metal, carbon fiber, and plastic.

Adding insult to injury is the fact that the owner only recently purchased the car and had apparently only driven it 100 miles (160 km). Fortunately, no one was injured in the blaze.

It remains to be seen what triggered the fire. The fact that the blaze started right next to a fuel pump suggests that there could have been some kind of fuel mishap but it’s impossible to say. Whatever the cause, we hope for the sake of the driver that they have an insurance policy that will fully cover the loss of the car.

As a reminder, the McLaren 765LT is powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine pumping out a cool 755 hp at 7,500 rpm and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque at 5,500 rpm. Prices in the U.S. start at $358,000.

The McLaren 720S Spider Is Sublime, But Is It The Supercar To Go For?

While the McLaren 720S Spider has been on the market for quite some time, Harry Metcalfe only recently had the opportunity to feature it on his YouTube channel. As always, his review is comprehensive and covers the exterior and interior design of the car before he heads out onto the street to see what it is like to drive.

Metcalfe opens up his review by mentioning that in recent months he’s also had the opportunity to drive the Lamborghini Huracan Evo and Ferrari F8 Tributo, allowing him to easily compare the 720S to them. He is immediately impressed with how refined the 720S Spider is, commenting that its cabin is quieter than a Porsche 911 and that its transmission works seamlessly when left in automatic mode. He is also very fond of the steering wheel and the digital instrument cluster.

Watch Also: It’s Very Hard To Find Something Wrong With The McLaren 720S Spider

When he starts to push the car a little harder, he does notice that there is some turbo lag, particularly if you’re driving it in comfort mode without using the paddle shifters. He adds that the rear wheels frequently struggle for traction but that’s not surprising consider how much power the car has.

The steering of the 720S Spider is also superb, Metcalfe reports. He says the electro-hydraulic system is much better than the steerings offered by Ferrari and Lamborghini, going as far as to suggest that it is “Lotus-like.”

While the 720S is a very expensive car, prices of lightly-used examples have plummeted in recent years, making it a bit of a bargain compared to its rivals.

BMW Chose Control Over Out-And-Out Shift Speed For the New M3/M4 Transmission

In its latest video, BMW has taken six minutes to explain the reasoning behind its decision to fit the new M3 and M4 with a torque converter automatic transmission instead of a dual-clutch one.

With the help of a transmission designer named Karsten, the advantages of the torque converter gearbox are outlined. The move away from a DCT transmission in any M car is noteworthy because its speed is hard to beat.

“Yes, changing gear with a double-clutch transmission is even faster and sharper with the optimal gear because it can also use inertia, which we can’t with a torque converter transmission,” says Karsten.

Read Also: Is The 2021 BMW M4 With The Six-Speed Manual The One To Buy?

Despite that, the M3 and the M4 now use a slightly slower torque converter transmission because it’s a question of considering the full package. These are known to be smoother at low speeds, which makes them better for luxury applications.

Their sluggishness made them unfashionable for performance cars in the oughts and the early teens, but they recently had a renaissance. Thanks to the hard work of people like Karsten, torque converter transmission shift speeds have improved and this one can shift gears in as little as 150 milliseconds. There are other advantages, too.

“With the torque converter transmission, through the converter lock-up clutch and the direct clutch to clutch shift, we now have, in principle, all gears pre-selected,” says Karsten. “Whereby with the double-clutch transmission, just one other gear can be preselected, which means that you can shift very quickly into this gear. If you decide on a different gear, then the gear shift is not optimal.”

That means that drivers have better shifts more of the time, and smoother changes at low speeds. Indeed, BMW feels it’s the best transmission for even high-performance applications like the M3/M4.

“I think the gear change is pretty close to perfection both as regards speed and comfort,” says Karsten.

Chris Harris Treats The Toyota GR Yaris Like The Rally Car For The Road That It Is

Don’t let the size, tiny, but punchy, three-cylinder engine and aggressive styling mislead you. The Toyota GR Yaris isn’t your typical hot hatch, but rather the closest thing to a rally car for the road that money can buy today.

While the regular Yaris is built around the GA-B platform, the 257 HP and 266 lb-ft (360 Nm) of torque, 1.6-liter turbo-three-powered GR model uses a combination of the GA-B and GA-C architectures, with the latter normally underpinning models such as the Corolla, Prius and Lexus UX.

Driven: 2021 Toyota GR Yaris Is A Great Hot Hatch, But We Do Have Some Gripes

This was mandatory for the implementation of an all-wheel drive system, which, together with the short wheelbase, wide tracks and sticky tires, make it an absolute marvel around corners. Engaging the sport driving mode makes it oversteer at will, encouraging the driver to keep the throttle down.

This is something that Chris Harris learned the fun way while driving Toyota’s homologation special on Top Gear. The model, which does the nought to 62 mph (0-100 km/h) in a little over 5 seconds and tops out at 143 mph (230 km/h), will be featured in their Series 30, Episode 4 that airs on Sunday, together with a used sports car guide for the ‘midlife crisis’. This will depict the TVR Chimaera, Vauxhall Monaro and a Toyota MR2 with a Ferrari F355 body kit.

In case you missed it, the popular car show’s previous episode showed an off-road comparison between the Land Rover Defender, Mercedes-AMG G63 and Ariel Nomad R in the Scottish Highlands.
