A Look Inside The Kia Dealership In New Jersey That Sells Lambos, McLarens, GT-Rs And Other Exotics

Last week, we reported on a Kia dealership trending online that stocks all kinds of luxury, sports, and exotic cars alongside their normal inventory. Naturally, we were curious, so we went to check the dealership out in person, and the story as to why those cars are there was so much more than we could have ever expected.

Some of the highlights of Kia of Riverdale’s inventory include three Lamborghinis, four McLarens, four Porsches, five AMG’s, five BMW M Cars, seven Audi RS cars, two Nissan GT-Rs, and a Tesla Model S Plaid. If luxury’s more your thing, they also have two Bentleys, a Maybach, four S-Classes, and a G-Wagen. The Kia dealership’s most expensive car, a Lamborghini Aventador SV, is listed for a whopping $475,999.

How It All Started

We spoke with Jeremy Rochelle, the dealership’s owner, as to how all these cars came to be here, and the answer was actually quite interesting. As it turns out, his dealings in exotic cars started around 15 years ago as an independent business, and it wasn’t until only a few years ago that he and his two partners decided to start selling them out of real dealerships.

Rochelle chose Kia for his dealership because he personally likes where the brand is headed (and we’d be inclined to agree), while his partners chose others like Nissan, Infiniti, Mitsubishi, and Volkswagen. He said that while the exotic car business was already in place and planned when he bought the dealership, the scale to which it’s grown was totally unexpected, and attributes the success to a combination of smart acquisitions, an ideal location, and the current state of the market.

It’s Simply Good Business

Rochelle and his two partners are set up in various locations across New Jersey, Florida, and Ohio, specifically so they can cover a wide range of demographics. All sales are data-driven from extensive research on market trends, and as a result, Rochelle says he would consider buying almost anything so long as he feels he can make a return on his investment.

To keep up with everything, Rochelle has a dedicated vehicle acquisition team at the dealership, and he and his partners are constantly swapping cars and data to maximize their success. And it seems to work, as sales for these high-end cars, at least at Kia of Riverdale, account for between 14 and 20 percent of their monthly turnover. On top of that, that figure only accounts for cars that sell for $100,000+, which means it’s likely even higher when you factor in cars like the AMG’s, M’s, and RS’s, which are under $100,000, but obviously don’t qualify as “normal” by any stretch of the imagination.

Customers Value Low-Pressure Environment

So while on the surface it may appear that the cars are just there on some sort of consignment or are just being used to draw eyes to the dealership, they actually get sold as regular inventory, meaning that the experience of buying a McLaren from Kia of Riverdale is no different than if you were to buy a Sorento from them. Given that, you’d think this type of purchasing experience for these high-end cars would turn some people off, but Rochelle says it’s actually the opposite.

Many of the dealers where these cars are typically sold sometimes have a perceived stigma of ‘un-approachability’ surrounding them, so by selling them out of something like a Kia dealership, Rochelle aims to make the buying experience much more inviting. He says that many people who are in the market for these cars actually value the low-pressure environment created by his dealership, and most figure that if the majority of their vehicle’s servicing will take place at its respective brand’s dealership anyway, who cares where it’s purchased from?

Regarding any skepticism about the vehicles’ condition, each and every one of them must pass a full mechanical inspection from their respective manufacturer’s specialists before Rochelle and his team even consider selling them. That being said, not all jobs get outsourced to other dealerships, as probably one of the most surprising things about Kia of Riverdale is that they actually have a Lamborghini technician on site for certain repairs. A white Huracan was being worked on at the time of our visit, so we got to witness the rare sight of a Kia Telluride being serviced 10 feet away from a Lamborghini.

Has Anyone Traded In An Exotic For A Kia?

Nearing the end of the visit, there was still one more question on our minds that we felt had to be asked: Has anyone traded in a Kia for any of the exotics, or vice versa? According to Rochelle, the answer is no, at least not yet. In the end, the fascinating story behind this dealership went so much deeper than we could have ever expected, and we’d like to thank Jeremy Rochelle, James Morando, Henry Lopez, and the rest of Kia of Riverdale for taking their time to help us tell it.

2022 Kia Stinger Is Official, Brings A New 300hp Base 2.5 Turbo And Other Subtle Changes

The 2022 Kia Stinger is upon us. A moderate facelift as opposed to a full-blown new model, the latest version of the Korean sports sedan features mild but meaningful revisions to freshen things up after four years of production.

The newly-unveiled Stinger confirms most of what we already knew, thanks to the Korean and European models launched last year being virtually identical to the new US-market Stinger. That too, and just last week, we reported on how US and Canadian dealers had already listed images and specs of the new 2022 Stinger on their websites.

A New Base Engine And More Power For V6

One aspect about the Stinger that wasn’t confirmed was the inclusion of a new powertrain for the entry-level GT-Line trim. It’s now official that the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder has been replaced with a 2.5-liter engine that has the same number of cylinders. The new engine retains its turbo and is good for 300 hp (224 kW) and 311 lb-ft (422 Nm) of torque — an increase of 45 hp (36 kW) from the outgoing engine. Kia says that the new engine, with its increased displacement, won’t affect fuel economy.

The GT-Line isn’t alone in getting a power increase, although it’s fair to say that the 45 hp gain is more to write home about than the 3 hp (2.2 kW) bump given to the GT. Yes, the 3.3-liter turbocharged V6 gets an increase of less than 1%, giving the 2022 Stinger GT an output figure of 368 hp (274 kW) — still not shabby. Torque output remains the same at 376 lb-ft (510 Nm).

The reason behind the modest power increase for the Stinger GT is its new electronic variable exhaust system which is said to enhance the Stinger’s “audible ‘calling card’.”

Exterior

The dimensions of the 2022 Stinger remain the same at 190.2 inches (4,831mm) long and 73.6 inches (1,869mm) wide, with a wheelbase of 114.4 inches (2,905mm). Exterior changes are kept to a minimum. New badges displaying Kia’s new corporate logo feature up front and on the wheel caps. The headlights feature new DRL “signatures,” with an optional “Stinger Signature.”

The rear of the Stinger now features a taillight design that spans the liftgate’s width, which mimics the look of a Maserati. The GT models get full-LED treatment, which includes the turn signals as well. Below the lights are ever-so-slightly larger exhaust tips in a quad design.

Finally, new wheels are available across the range, with either 18-inch or 19-inch options available.

Some Meaningful Upgrades Inside

Seeing as it’s the place where we spend the most time, it makes sense that the designers have spent a little extra effort on the inside of the refreshed Kia Stinger. The 2022 Stinger aims to up the ante in the fight against Germany with an overall plusher interior. As standard, the Stinger comes with a wider 10-inch touchscreen infotainment display capable of both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The screen sits atop a dashboard that features a new design of Nappa leather dependent on the model.

The central screen in front of the driver is now larger, with a 4.2-inch TFT display as standard, or a 7-inch monitor for cars that include the blind-spot view monitor and surround-view bird’s eye parking display.

Speaking of safety equipment, the 2022 Stinger features a new suite of Kia’s Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. You get collision avoidance, cross-traffic alert, smart cruise control that uses the navigation system to lower speed for corners, lane assist, and highway driving assist.

A Special Edition Coming In The Spring

Finally, the new 2022 Stinger’s announcement was rounded-out with the news that a new special edition was coming for the Stinger Range. The Scorpion will add to the range that consists of the GT-Line, GT1, and GT2.

The Scorpion will be available in exclusive exterior colors: Snow White, Aurora Black, or Ceramic Silver. It also features a rear spoiler, blacked-out fender garnish, side mirror caps, and darkened exhaust tips, unique black wheels and carbon fiber pattern trim inside.

Kia Teases All-New EV6

Kia Corporation has revealed the first official images of the EV6 – its first dedicated battery electric vehicle (BEV) built on the company’s new EV platform (Electric-Global Modular Platform, or E-GMP).

EV6 is also the first of Kia’s next-generation BEVs to be developed under a new design philosophy that embodies Kia’s shifting focus towards electrification.

“EV6 is the embodiment of both our brand purpose, ‘Movement that inspires’, and our new design philosophy. It has been designed to inspire every journey by offering an instinctive and natural experience that improves the daily lives of our customers, and provide user ownership that is simple, intuitive and integrated,” said Karim Habib, Senior Vice President and Head of Kia Global Design Center. “Our aim is to design the physical experience of our brand and to create bold, original and inventive electric vehicles.”

Kia’s new naming strategy for upcoming dedicated BEVs

As part of the company’s brand transition, Kia’s new dedicated battery electric vehicles will be named according to a new naming strategy. The new approach brings simplicity and consistency to Kia’s EV nomenclature across all global markets.

All of Kia’s new dedicated BEVs will start with the prefix ‘EV’ which makes it easy for consumers to understand which of Kia’s products are fully electric. This is followed by a number which corresponds to the car’s position in the line-up.

Designed and engineered to embody Kia’s new brand slogan, ‘Movement that inspires’, EV6 will make its world premiere during the first quarter of 2021.

2021 Kia K7 GL3 Rendering

After we have seen the new Kia logo applied in the next-gen K7 (codenamed as GL3) all around, from interior to exterior or wheel caps. Today we want to share with you a new rendering from AtchaCars based on the latest spy shots and it looks promising.

What we know so far?

When we saw the first spy picture of this car, we refused to believe this was a new generation of Kia’s midsize sedan, the K7. Why? Because we thought was to early for it, but now this pictures from our colleagues at AutoPost allow us to confirms that Kia is already working, urgently, in the third generation K7 (known as Cadenza in some overseas markets) codenamed as GL3.

What could be the reason for this urgency? Well, the problem is inside and it’s called Hyundai Grandeur. Since Hyundai launched the Grandeur facelift which was already like a full model change the sales of the K7 have dropped significantly. If you compare it, during March in the local market, the Grandeur sold 13,544 units in March, while the K7 sold only 3,863 units.

Then in April this situation was repeated as Grandeur sold 11,566 units and the K7 only 3,379 units. The K7 went through a successful facelift last year and once surpassed the Grandeur sales, but after the new Grandeur was released, it was unable to beat it again. The report says Kia Motors has become urgent in preparing a new model, and a test car was first caught in South Korea.

The Kia K7 went through a facelift in June last year with the launch of K7 Premier. The K7 Premier, which was the first facelift model to be released after the release of the second generation K7 (codenamed as YG) in January 2016, is armed with a refined design and outstanding specifications such as 2.5 gasoline engines, a guess room monitor system and a digital instrument panel that were not available in the previues Grandeur IG for example.

Looks like the diamond-pattern of the grille are expanded all-around the bumper, like in the Grandeur

In November last year, the Grandeur also faced a facelift, and the advanced specifications applied to the K7 Premier were also applied to the Grandeur, and many consumers who were waiting for a new car stood in a long queue to purchase the Grandeur instead of K7. As of May 2020, the Grandeur and the K7 are not actually in the right race, as their sales are more than three times higher.

The existing replacement cycle, which was 5-6 years, has been shortened to 4-5 years. Since the news of the full-change already within less than a year since the facelift model appeared, many consumers said, “Hyundai Kia’s model replacement cycle is too fast.” He said, “How long have I been in the K7 Premier already, are we going to do a full change already?” So the 3rd gen K7 is expected to be released in the first half of next year.

About powertrain, Kia will keep the 2.5 GDi while will add the 2.5 Turbo GDi (could Kia launch a K7 GT-Line or even a K7 GT with this engine?) as well as replace the 3.0 GDi for the new 3.5 GDi engine. The hybrid will left the old configuration in favor of the new 1.6 Turbo + electric motor of the new Sorento or Santa Fe.

Until now, Hyundai Kia’s model change cycle has been around 5 to 6 years, but recently, the replacement cycle has been shortened to around 4 to 5 years. Avante (know as Elantra in overseas markets) had a full-change model (codenamed as CN7) in 2020, five years after 6th gen Avante (codenamed as AD) launched in 2015, and Kia’s medium-sized sedan K5 also received its third gen model (DL3) last year, 4 years after the launch of the 2nd gen model in 2015.

Some claimed it was a Kia K4 test car (me too) that was a China-only model between K3 and K5, but who took the picture said, I have checked the prototype label and was labeled as GL3.” so that corresponds to third generation K7.

What can be seen is that the front part design has a significantly larger grille than the previous one. There are some customers who are disappointed by the new grille or the style grille that can be compared to what we have seen in the Santa Fe facelift, rather than the vertical grille, which was the symbol of the previous K7 generations.

The details such as the shape of the headlightss or taillights are not known yet, but we expect something like the K5 but more upscale. We have spotted an interesting details on the side style of the new K7, which has new exterior mirrors now attached to the door like in the K5 and an extended C-pillar line now has a shark fin antenna premiered on the Kia Proceed and followed by the all-new Kia Sorento.

Why Kia wants to make with this earlier launch of a new generation K7? Well, follow the success of the new K5 which already beated the new Sonata DN8 in terms of sales.

2022 Kia CV: Everything We Know About The Electric Sporty Crossover Coming For Tesla

Slowly but surely, Kia’s electric vehicle onslaught is gaining momentum with a myriad of new electrified models to debut within the coming years. One of these is a crossover that straddles the line between traditional SUV and a liftback codenamed CV.

While the CV’s nomenclature is yet to be confirmed, spy photos indicate it shares styling elements from both the Kia Futuron and Imagine concepts that debuted at last year’s China International Import Expo and Geneva Motor Show respectively. Now, let’s take an illustrated preview at what to expect based on the prototypes we’ve seen on the road.

A Futuristic New Direction

Kia used both concept models as a statement of intent for future vehicles; emphasizing sporty and elegant design, coupled with a new interpretation of Kia’s signature ‘tiger-nose’ grille. The production series CV is the first model to showcase this new design language with a striking, wedge-shaped body.

Frontal styling, for instance, features full-width LED lighting, dynamic lower graphic and a sculptured, clamshell hood. Sleek blacked-out a-pillars exude a floating-roof effect, and the belt-line raises towards the rear, putting further emphasis on its low and lean stance.

The most dramatic view comes from the rear; its styling is dominated by super-slim LED taillights that frame the upper arch of the hatch, featuring an illuminated fin pattern that could have come from some futuristic type of cooktop stove.

Platform & Powertrain

Like the Hyundai’s upcoming electric 45 CUV and Prophecy sedan, the CV utilises the automaker’s Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), that will also underpin several new electric vehicles set to appear soon.

Kia gave us a futuristic glimpse of its EV plans with last year’s Imagine (above) and Futuron (below) concepts

The Futuron Concept is 4,850 mm (190.9-in) long, 1,550 mm (61-in) high with a generous 3,000 mm (118.1-in) wheelbase.

While power and torque outputs are an unknown quantity, the dedicated EV will have a driving range of up to 310 miles (500km) and will offer blistering quick DC fasting-charging of under 20 minutes. If the upcoming Hyundai 45 BEV is anything to go by, expect an SK innovation-supplied battery pack in the 75-100 kWh bracket, coupled with a potent dual-motor setup.

A Roomy Place To Be

While we’ve yet to lay eyes on the interior, the CV will offer a spacious layout aided by a flat, skateboard-style floor. A large digital screen will combine both instrument cluster and infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, WiFi connectivity, and a surround-view monitor.

Full autonomous driving is still some way off for the CV. However, from launch, you can be rest assured driver-assist technology will feature autonomous emergency braking, rear cross-traffic assist, lane-keeping aid, safe exit assist and rear occupant alert.

Prototypes of the Kia CV have already been spotted on the road, some even being tested alongside Teslas

Rivals & Reveal

Kia’s new pure-electric halo car will have plenty of competitors when it lands in the market next year, either as a 2021MY or 2022MY, though two models immediately stand out; the Tesla Model 3 and the Polestar 2 – Especially the latter, seems like one of the closest matches right now with the information we have in our hands.

Review: Mercedes EQC 400 Is A Strong Presence In The EV Crossover Segment

Depending on pricing, dimensions, specs and market availability, other potential battery-electric rivals may include the Hyundai 45, Toyota’s upcoming CUV, Volkswagen ID.4, and possibly the Skoda Enyaq.

So, do you think Kia is heading in the right design direction with its premiere EV model? Tell us in the comments below.

Kia Soul EV Will Not Come to US Market After All

Today we’ve heard reports that the Kia Soul EV will not be launched in the US market after all.

The new Soul EV has been shown at US auto shows for the past two years, was present at the national media introduction in early 2019, and was featured on the Kia website under the “Upcoming Vehicles” section. At first, it was set to launch a few months after the gas-powered 2020 Kia Soul. Then, Kia announced a delay of the EV version until the 2021 model year, citing a battery shortage and a decision to prioritize the Niro EV first and the Soul EV second. Now, it appears to have been cancelled for the US market altogether.

As of today, the Kia website no longer lists the 2021 Soul EV under “Upcoming Vehicles,” although Kia reps have not yet officially announced the cancellation.

Kia has committed to bring more electric vehicles to market, and we’ve seen spy shots of an upcoming electric crossover testing alongside a Tesla Model 3.

Perhaps Kia wants to focus all attention on this future EV, especially since the buzz around the new Soul has died down now and the launch of the Soul EV may be anticlimactic.

We’ve also heard that the Soul EV is much more expensive to build than the normal gas-powered Soul, which would reduce profit margins and market appeal for the vehicle.

In other world markets such as the UK, Kia ONLY offers the Soul in its EV form with 243 mile range, but it seems like the current-generation Soul EV will not see American shores after all. If you want a Kia electric crossover for now, you will unfortunately have to opt for the Niro EV, which is a more traditional style versus the unique looks of the Soul.

However, the Soul EV will live on in other markets around the world.
