Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV Concept Previews The Upcoming Electric Crossover

Mercedes has officially unveiled the Maybach EQS SUV concept.

Designed to preview the upcoming electric crossover, which is expected to arrive in 2023, the model is described as a “near-production” concept that will take luxury into the 21st century.

Dressed in Zircon Red and Obsidian Black Metallic, the ultra-luxury model features a bold front fascia with a massive fully enclosed grille. It’s flanked by slender LED headlights with “individual diamond blocks framed with a fine-knit mesh of the Maybach emblem.”

Continuing further back, there’s a star hood ornament, black body cladding and massive 24-inch wheels with a bowl-like design. The model also has aerodynamically optimized running boards, full-width taillights and flush-mounted door handles.

Speaking of the doors, they’re fully automatic and the handles will extend as the driver approaches. As they get closer, the driver’s door will automatically open and they’ll also have the option of opening the rear doors remotely as well.

Moving into the cabin, drivers are greeted by a futuristic steering wheel and a full-width Hyperscreen display which includes a 12.3-inch screen for the front passenger.  Elsewhere, there’s a floating center console, rose gold accents, white piano lacquer trim and a “faux fur” floor covering.

The rear passenger compartment is the star of the show as it features two executive seats, which are separated by an elegant console.  The latter houses a flower vase and drink holders as well as a high-tech armrest with an integrated infotainment system.

Mercedes didn’t say much else about the concept, but the four-seater has a rear seat entertainment system and is envisioned to be offered with “individual equipment options such as folding tables, a box of champagne goblets or a refrigerated compartment.”  The latter should show up in the upcoming production model.

The company was also coy about specifications, but confirmed the concept rides on their new electric vehicle platform and previews the EQS SUV which will be introduced next year.  It will be followed by a Maybach variant and the company said the crossovers will have a WLTP range of around 373 miles (600 km).

Someone Scored A Bargain With This ’99 Oldsmobile Silhouette OSV Concept

Six Recaro bucket seats? Check. Brembo brakes with beefy drilled rotors? Check. Candy apple red paint? Check. The Cadillac of minivans (see movie reference below)? Somebody get Danny Devito the keys!

Recently, someone scooped up a piece of GM history: the Oldsmobile Silhouette OSV concept that somehow found its way to Empire Motors in Kelowna, B.C. Canada.

According to the Autotrader listing that has now been removed, just a few days after we discovered it, the concept was priced at just $8,588.

The Dustbuster days

Besides a minor role in the 1995 mafioso comedy ‘Get Shorty’, the Oldsmobile Silhouette was never known for its cool factor. First introduced as one of GMs “Dustbuster” vans back in 1990, the Silhouette was more likely to be found in an airport rental parking lot than a kids bedroom poster.

The Silhouette (and its GM siblings) received a total redesign for 1997, with Oldsmobile discontinuing short-wheelbase models after 1999. This didn’t earn the van any street cred, but it helped to distance the Silhouette from its badge-engineered brothers.

Olds going out with a bang

By 1999 the folks at Oldsmobile could see the writing on the wall; the 102-year-old carmaker would announce its demise by the following December. Somehow the GM bean counters let this one slip through the cracks as Oldsmobile readied a line of concepts for the annual SEMA show in Las Vegas. It was one last hurrah before the brand officially closed shop in 2004.

The 1999 Oldsmobile Silhouette OSV concept as seen in GM’s promotional press material

Oldsmobile Specialty Vehicles (OSV) readied three concepts based on the Alero coupe, Intrigue Sedan and, surprisingly, the Silhouette minivan. The Alero and Intrigue were fairly attractive cars in their day, made even more so by all the OSV enhanced visuals cues. Blown motors and raspy exhausts made sure there was no confusing the OSVs with your father’s Oldsmobile.

The Silhouette received all the visual cues like its stablemates, but sadly no blower – all the 3.4 liter V6 got was an upgraded intake and exhaust system with the same semi-oval tips as the Alero and Intrigue. It also featured chrome wheels wrapped in sticky rubber with big Brembo brakes, which meant there would be functional improvements as well; after all, they had to make sure it could handle all 215 ponies. Show-stopping paint, ground effects, and a two-tone Recaro laden interior helped bring it all together.

Like most concept cars, the OSV cars went away into storage, never to see the light of day, save for a couple of future events and shows. Nevertheless, the OSV cars have popped up for sale from time to time, but this Silhouette is actually road legal.

Acura MDX Prototype Previews A Sportier And More Upscale SUV Complete With A Type S Variant For 2021

The Acura MDX is America’s best-selling three-row luxury crossover and it’s about to get a radical redesign.

Previewed by this thinly veiled MDX Prototype, the production model will be launched early next year and followed by an MDX Type S in the summer of 2021.

As for the prototype itself, it follows in the footsteps of the 2021 TLX and features a diamond pentagon grille that is flanked by slender JewelEye LED headlights. The crossover also has a sculpted hood, sporty air intakes and a wide lower opening.

Continuing down the sides, there’s athletic bodywork and a sharply sculpted beltline which helps to emphasize the longer wheelbase. Acura also said the crossover adopts a lower and wider body as well as a greenhouse that has been set further back.

Other highlights include more dramatic third quarter glass and a sportier rear end with Chicane LED taillights. The model also has a dual exhaust system and 21-inch alloy wheels.

The upscale styling continues in the cabin as drivers will find Milano leather, polished aluminum accents and open-pore wood trim infused with metallic flakes. The prototype has also been equipped with stylish seats that features curvilinear quilting, gradient perforation and high-contrast piping.

Speaking of the seats, Acura says there is more legroom in all three rows. The model also features more first- and third-row headroom as well as added cargo capacity. Last but not least, the front-row sport seats have 16-way power adjustment and a massage function with nine different modes.

Elsewhere, there’s a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a matching 12.3-inch infotainment system. The model also has a panoramic moonroof, a leather-wrapped dashboard and an LED ambient lighting system with 27 different schemes.

On the audio side of things, the MDX Prototype has a 25 speaker ELS Studio 3D sound system with 22 discrete channels and 1000 watts of power. Acura says it’s the most powerful system they’ve ever offered and sets a “new standard for concert-quality in-vehicle audio.”

While speculation suggested the four-cylinder engine would carryover from the TLX, that’s not the case as Acura confirmed the entry-level unit is a 3.5-liter V6 which is paired to a ten-speed automatic transmission.

The company didn’t release specifications for the base engine, but said the MDX Type S will have a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 that produces an estimated 355 hp (265 kW / 360 PS) and 354 lb-ft (480 Nm) of torque. The Type S will also have a fourth-generation super-handling all-wheel drive system.

The crossover rides on an all-new light truck platform that has been designed to deliver “athletic handling, refined ride comfort and exceptional cabin quietness.” The company didn’t go into many specifics, but confirmed the model will have a double wishbone front suspension, four-piston Brembo brakes and the most rigid body ever used on an Acura SUV. The MDX will also have an Intelligent Dynamics System which allows the driver to customize the ride, handling, steering, suspension and powertrain characteristics with the twist of a dial.

The MDX will also come with the AcuraWatch suite of driver assistance systems. Many features will carryover from the TLX including Traffic Jam Assist and Road Departure Mitigation.
