How About An Open-Top VW Golf GTI Based On The Old Audi A3 Cabriolet?

Remember the Audi A3 Cabriolet that was dropped for 2020? Well, someone does and thought it would be a good idea to make an open-top Volkswagen Golf GTI based on its defunct cousin from Ingolstadt.

Mind you, the only Golf bits in this rendering are the front end, GTI badges and taillights, as everything else is pure A3 Cabrio, including the overall styling of the back end, the profile, and probably even the interior, as we can see the older infotainment screen mounted on top of the dashboard.

Review: 2021 VW Golf GTI – Time To Find Out If The New Hot Hatch Is Worthy Of The Name

While KDesignAG was busy coming up with this odd Volkswagen/Audi mashup, the automaker has already launched the new-gen Golf GTI in Europe. UK pricing starts at £33,460 ($43,337) for the six-speed manual and £34,960 ($45,280) for the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, whereas in Germany, it will set buyers back at least €37,607.38 ($44,285).

The United States won’t be getting the latest Golf GTI until the third quarter of 2021, and while pricing will be announced in due course, we expect it to start at around $30,000.

It will launch with the same turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine powering the European variant, which puts out 242 HP (245 PS / 180 kW) output and 273 lb-ft (370 Nm) torque. The nought to 62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint takes 6.2 seconds with the optional DSG gearbox and the front-wheel drive hot hatch has a top speed electronically limited to 155 mph (250 km/h).

Audi Q7/Q8, Mercedes GLE, BMW X5/X6, Volvo XC90, Lexus RX And Range Rover Sport Compete In Off-Road Trial

Finding an absolute winner when it comes to all-wheel drive systems can be extremely difficult, as various other factors such as engines, tires, weight and even the driver can prove just as important as the actual tech sending power to both axles.

However, the guys over at the SUV Battle YouTube channel did a good job getting all these direct rivals together and having them compete over a steep dirt incline.

The following SUVs were called upon to showcase what their all-wheel drive systems are capable of: the 2020 Audi Q8, 2019 Mercedes GLE, 2019 BMW X5, 2019 BMW X6, 2019 Volvo XC90, 2019 Lexus RX 350, 2019 Range Rover Sport and 2018 Audi Q7, plus a 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Multiple runs were carried with most of these SUVs – except for the Grand Cherokee, but that’s alright seen as how it’s not quite a direct rival for all of the other models here.

In the end, they realized that having just one driver perform all the runs was a better way to benchmark the AWD systems, and the results were reasonably conclusive. It’s too bad they couldn’t get similarly-powered engines for all the vehicles. The Range Rover Sport had the most powerful engine, so there’s no surprise that it performed really well.

What was a bit surprising was seeing the BMW X5 struggling to climb up the hill, while the X6 performed much better, although different drivers were involved, so we’ve got to factor that in.

Other models that stood out, although not necessarily in a good way, were the Volvo XC90 and Lexus RX, both of which underperformed, especially the Lexus. Meanwhile, the Audi Q8 climbed the hill as if it was in the middle of filming a commercial for Audi’s quattro AWD system.

Audi Driver Quickly Discovers Quattro Doesn’t Work Under Water

Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive system definitely is very capable, but apparently is no match for a flooded underpass.

While that should be common sense, almost every time there’s flooding someone thinks their car can make it.

This time it was an A7 owner who decided to try their luck. As you can see, they went into the water at speed and things quickly took a turn for the worse.

After getting a short way through, the front end sinks beneath the water. The rear end then floats up and car is taken away by the waves it just created. It then bobs around, before smacking into one of the walls.

The underpass was reportedly closed at the time and it remains unclear what happened next. However, Hungary’s Index reports the underpass has drainage issues and flooded days before this incident occurred on June 17th.

According to the the same source, an inch (27mm) of rain fell and flooded the underpass. Several people attempted to get through, but a number got stuck including the driver of a BMW who reportedly had to be rescued by firefighters. An “old Suzuki” did make it across, but the news outlet noted that there “wasn’t as much water as in the new video.”

Driving through a flooded area is obviously not the best of ideas. Not only can you get swept away, but it can easily cost thousands of dollars in damage – not to mention the fact that you’re putting your, and any potential passenger’s, life at risk…

Looking For A Blue Unicorn? Here’s A 1996 Audi S6 Plus, The One With The V8

Back in 1997, Audi retired the C4 generation of the A6, after only four years of production, but not before releasing the hottest model of the series, the S6 Plus.

Made in the final two years of production, 952 units saw the light of day, including 855 Avants (estate) and 97 sedans. The limited production number made it a true automotive unicorn, especially in the four-door body style, but this wasn’t the only highlight.

In fact, you had to pop the hood in order to see the icing on the cake, the 4.2-liter DOHC V8, with 32 valves, which replaced the 2.2-liter five-pot powering the standard S6. The engine produced 322 HP (326 PS / 240 kW), 95 HP (96 PS / 71 kW) more than the smaller lump, for a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) of 5.6 seconds (5.7 seconds for the Avant).

Other highlights included the upgraded six-speed manual transmission, re-tuned suspension and bigger brakes, joined by the leather and Alcantara upholstery, electrically adjustable front seats with memory, electric sunroof and integrated phone.

This 24-year old S6 Plus was apparently gifted to Spanish newspaper El Mundo, in return for advertising space, and was used by the former CEO, before being sold to the Marquees of Antella. In the possession of its new owner, the car was repainted in Nogaro Blue, the original color, and the engine was rebuilt.

You already know where this is going, so we’ll cut to the chase by telling you that RMSothebys estimates that it will fetch between €40,000 and €60,000 ($43,853-$65,779). It will be offered without reserve at an online auction that kicks off on June 3 at 1:00 p.m. CET (7:00 a.m. EST) in Essen, Germany.
